As promised: the first revision material for "to be" has arrived!! In my Montessori inspired classroom a revision lesson is not a lesson where all the students are working on the same task at the same time. This is why I need a couple of different materials to divide the kids into groups and stations. The material I'm going to show you today is extremely east to prepare 😄
All you need is a piece of paper and dice. This time we're using three different kids of dice:
1-10, 1-20, and colours. (In the picture below you can see a 1-12 die but the "to be board", as I call it, has grown since having its photo taken 😜)
The board helps the student practice sentence formation with the verb "to be" in all forms. Students roll the dice. Each dice point to a different table: pronoun, sentence type, adjective/country. For example:
1 + 12 + red = I'm not from France.
9 + 3 + orange = Are they friendly?
It's up to the student to choose the correct for of "to be". They may write the sentence down in their notebooks or simply say it out loud. The written option lets me control the mistakes when working with a bigger group of students. The spoken option works best with one-to-one or small group activities.
If either me or the student wish to, they translate the sentence into their L1 or draw a picture to show the meaning of the sentence (not always easy to do). I usually tell my kids to create 10 sentences or give them a time limit, about 15 minutes usually.
The kids like this activity because of the different dice they get to use: it automatically resembles a game (another material with dice can be found here) 😊
I like it because not only do they get to practice a bit of grammar but also vocabulary. I used the vocabulary presented in unit 2 of our course book (Brainy, MacMiIlan).
